Dear Fave,

Skin is a beauty and as such the skin must be treated with care. Surprisingly some give more attention to looks but in general, we all have some form of wanting to feel that way, as good as that is, it’s only superficial and here’s why

INTRODUCTION TO SKINCARE Look at the skin in a more wide view, literally, you’ll see why most skin conditions and diseases manifest on the skin, besides being the largest organ in the human body and having so many defenses, it reveals so many signs too that helps with its diagnosis and management plan.

COMMON USES OF THE SKIN It could be physiological or pathological; Physiological Melanin giving the individual skin color Protection against environmental and other harmful substances acting as a barrier to traumatic exposure, extreme temperatures. UV radiations, Thermoregulation, giving warmth or cooling effects. Sensory perception Immunological surveillance against bacteria, toxins Control of insensible loss of fluid.

Pathological Shows signs of dehydration Reveals hyper or hypopigmentation (changes in the skin color) Other discolorations which help in the diagnosis of numerous diseases. I almost dabbled into this teaching when I wrote the article on burn although quite limited then but knowing the basics about the skin helps you understand its beauty in return making you beautiful and is why an introduction to this beauty roller coaster is certain now. For a fact, the skin covers the entire human body surface and acts as a barrier factor for interaction between the internal body and the external environment The skin is a unique organ and constantly undergoes different changes through the different stages of life, with some layers it enables the outer shed skin to be replaced with the renewed inner layer. The thickness or thinness of the skin varies with sex, age, and site on the body, thickest on the palms, soles, while on the eyelids it’s thin. As life begins the skin is thin and thickens as we grow but with age, there’s further thinning and this is because of dermal changes.

Layering down the skin consists of

The Epidermis The outermost layer you see physically on the skin which consists of a lot of dead cells, the skin naturally regenerates and sloughs off slowly, which is why it is necessary to exfoliate regularly reveals the regenerated skin underneath accessing the skins glow and beauty. It’s consists of the; Keratinocytes which is the majority of this layer. Melanocytes are responsible for the skin color, eyes and hair colors. Langerhan cell responsible for immune sensitization. Merkel's Cell is responsible for light touch, aids tickling, arousal and all.

The Dermis This is the next layer which consists of the collagen responsible for firmness of the skin, elastic fibers, sensory cells. This is the most important layer.

The Hypodermis Below the dermis is a big slab of fatty tissue which helps in keeping warmth and storing energy. Now that the major idea of the skin has been related, we’ll definitely enjoy this journey more together.

Love, F.P.
